Port La Nouvelle extension, France : an ACCROPODE™ II project

Port La Nouvelle extension - France

The PORT LA NOUVELLE extension project is fully devoted to the reduction in the carbon intensity of the energy production. The new infrastructure is aligned with the new challenges of the floating offshore wind industry. Various innovations have been implemented on the single layer armour covering the breakwaters in order to boost sea life development.

The added value of CLI

CLI developed a great understanding of the Contractor’s need and applied a problems solving mindset to this specific project.

Special features of the project

The project is located in the immediate vicinity of the 30 MW Gruissan and 30 MW Leucate offshore wind projects. Two new breakwaters are sheltering a vertical quay designed to accomodate a wind turbine assembling process.

Hydraulic conditions

  • The main breakwater is covered by ACCROPODE™ II units : 2.4 km
  • The secondary breakwater is covered by ACCROPODE™ II units : 0.6 km
  • The experimental ECOPODE™ units sanded, surface textured and with textured fiber glass formworks installed on the secondary breakwater.
  • The ACCROBERM™ II units are placed in the port to create underwater habitat for aquatic fauna

Construction Aspect

The breakwater is partially built with offshore methods at the last hundreds meters of the main breakwater, this is also the case for the secondary breakwater.
The main breakwater is built from land and then connects with the small offshore stretch at the roundhead already built with offshore methods. Approximately 17 000 ACCROPODE™ II units of maximum 14 m3 will be used for this project, for a total of 120 000 m3 of concrete.
